Integrating and Managing Language Resources

Objective

The objective of this WG is to raise awareness between researchers of existing methods and language resources and to produce innovative ideas for the important problem of constructing, integrating and managing language resources in a standardised way at a pan-European level.

Basic concepts

Next generation search systems, if they are to stand up to the expectations of the industrial users, require a large amount of training data. Such large amounts of data already exist in many cases, but researchers have difficulties in effectively using them because they follow disparate standards, or because they are simply unaware of them. The need to integrate and manage language resources has already been identified and acted upon in Europe (see FLaReNet, a project funded by the European Commission in the framework of the eContentPlus programme). This WG will follow the activities of such existing efforts, but at the same time it will take into account the needs of the industrial users. Top amongst these needs is privacy and anonymity making sure that whatever data is provided to help researchers cannot be used by competitors to reverse engineer processes or obtain any insights into corporate strategies.

Expected Outcomes

Methods will address the problems of constructing, integrating and managing language resources. The need of a European Language Resource Standards Framework will be widely explored and disseminated.
